I was an artist in residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts from August 13-September 1, 2025 in studio VA 5. VCCA has around 25 visual artists, writers, and composers in residence who come and go on a fluctuating schedule according to the person’s needs. All our meals are prepared for us here to maximize working time. I primarily worked on two large egg tempera paintings on panel. I aggressively reworked “The Mothership”, brightening the colors of the Pink Lady Slipper orchids, and adding more depth to the rocks and tree trunk. The second painting, “Tenacious Pink” was a blank 48”x36” panel when I arrived. I worked in my studio every day for 20 days to finish it.
New paintings in progress in Studio VA 5 at VCCA
The Mothership, egg tempera on panel, 36”x48”, 2025
Starting with a blank panel, I completed this painting, “Tenacious Pink”, egg tempera on panel, 48”x36” while in residence.
The gardens and magnolias at VCCA were still blooming. The pool was perfect for floating. My studio was large and had great natural light. Most importantly, I met amazing new friends and cows!
